In addition, the MNAC oversees restoration efforts, directs operations in painting, sculpture and other artistic techniques, and cunsults other museum centres on safety, museography and preventive conservation.

It holds some of the most representative works of Catalan modern art by such artists as Damià Campeny, Antoni Solà, Josep Flaugier, Claudi Lorenzale, Lluis Rigalt, Pau Milà i Fontanals, Pelegrí Clavé, Joaquim Espalter, Marià Fortuny, Martí i Alsina and Antoni Caba among many others.

The Chocolate Museum is the first facility of its kind in Catalonia. Its creation has been possible thanks to the determination and efforts of the members of the Guild and their suppliers.


Architectural Sites of Antoni Gaudí

is probably Antoni Gaudí's most famous building. In the latter years of his life, he refused all other work and moved to the office and workshop inside the church itself, until the first belfry on the Nativity façade was covered (1925); construction continues to this day.
is the largest of Gaudí's works in Barcelona. It covers an area of 20 hectares, which was originally to have been an English-style garden.
commonly known as "la Pedrera", is a unique building, built between 1906 and 1912 by Antoni Gaudí, and was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Currently, the building houses the main offices of the Fundació Caixa Catalunya which organizes a number of activities for public use. A visit allows access to the patios, the Espai Gaudi (loft and roof) and The Pedrera Apartment.
were comissioned to Antoni Gaudí by the financier Eusebi Güell, his great patron and sponsor.
was comissioned to Antoni Gaudí in 1904 by Josep Batlló. He asked Gaudí to remodel an original building dating from 1870, and his fabulous riches allowed the architect to set his imagination free.


Architectural Sites of Lluís Domènech i Montaner

is one of the world's leading concert halls. Considered to be one of Modernism's chief exponents, it was built by architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner between 1905 and 1908.
is a magnificant hospital complex designed by Domènech i Montaner. Surrounded by gardens, it covers a large area with several brick pavilions decorated with polychrome tile; when it was built it was an innovative concept of what a hospital should be like.
is one of most magnificent houses of one of most important avenues of Barcelona, the Passeig de Gracia. Project of the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, other collaborators were: sculptor Eusebi Arnau, ceramicist Antoni Serra i Fiter, mosaic designers Lluís Brú and Mario Maragliano and Gaspar Homar who designed interior decoration and furniture.


Other Historical Sites

is an itinerary that takes you through the Barcelona of Gaudí, Domènech i Montaner and Puig i Cadafalch, the architects who, together with others, made Barcelona the world capital of Modernism.
is made up of the Palau Condal, the King Martin lookout tower and Padellàs House. A visit to the underground archaeological site displays remains from the 1st cen. BC to the 8th cen. AD, allowing visiters to see what the Roman colony was like.
is one of the best examples of Catalan Gothic architecture. It contains numerous works of art, liturgical objects and furniture that the community of St. Clare nuns has collected since it was founded in 1327.
is dedicated to the memory of Jacint Verdaguer, an important author in the Renaixença, who laid the foundations for contemporary Catalan literature. The museum occupies two floors of Vil·la Joana, an eighteenth-century farmhouse located in the Collserola mountain range.
is located in the Barri Gòtic. Construction began on present-day basilica in 1298, during the bishopric of Bernat Pelegrí and the reign of King Jaume II. The façade remained unfinished until the end of the last century, inspired by a drawing from the 15th century by Mestre Carlí.
is an opera house that has retained its role as a cultural and arts centre throughout its history. In a single season the Liceu offers more than 40 different shows, which means nearly 300 performances and attendance by over 400,000 visitors.
is, externally, the only perfectly-finished Catalan Gothic church. Its outer walls display the features which differentiate Catalan Gothic from European.
is remarkably intact, given its age. Remains of the original 9th-century structure can be seen on the capitals and bases of the portal. The church was rebuilt in the 11th and 12th centuries and is shaped in the form of a Greek cross with three apses. The small cloister however is the highlight, with its Moorish arches and central fountain.
in the Barri Gòtic adjoins the cathedral on the west. It was first recorded as long ago as 926; the oldest parts of the present building date from the 12th, 13th and 15th C.
retains its Roman art-style structure, with certain Romanesque & gothic reformations; the cloister and the capital hall were built in the 15th century.
stands opposite the entrance to the Plaça del Rei. This giant hall is of historical importance; it was here that Christopher Columbus, following his first expedition to the New World, was received almost as an equal by the Spanish rulers Ferdinand II and Isabella I.
belongs to the Palacio Real Mayor. It is pure Gothic in style and was built at the beginning of the 14th century at the behest of Count James II. It was built on top of what was a Romanesque chapel dedicated to Saint Mary, which itself was built upon the ancient Roman city walls.
is considered one of the best beloved churches in Barcelona. Founded in the 10th century, it was rebuilt in 1322 (1322 - 1453) and is considered a text book example of Catalan Gothic.
is one of the oldest churches in Barcelona and is dedicated to the two martyrs, Justo and Pastor, who were the subjects of veneration during the 4th century. However, much of the building is of later, Visigothic construction.
was built at the end of the 19th century on the place where originally the main synagogue of the city was located. Only the front remains from the original construction, which dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries.
is characterized by its heavily embossed stonework. Located at the crossing of the Rambla with the Carrer del Carme, it was built between 1681 and 1732, formerly a Jesuit church.
