The annual Catalan tradition of eating grilled calçots will be heartily celebrated again this year by the American Society!

We start off our day trip by meeting at Avd. Diagonal, 617 - 619 (in front of the Corte Inglés near the Maria Christina metro stop) at 9:30am where we will hop on a private coach. This year we’re heading south…

We will be visiting the Royal Monastery of Santes Creus, one of the largest and best-preserved Cistercian monasteries that can be visited in the present day. Founded in 1168, this sober and imposing church contains the tombs of king Pere el Gran and of Jaume II and his wife Blanca d'Anjou, as well as the great admiral Roger de Llúria. Our visit to this impressive monastery includes a guided tour and a film which provides fascinating insight into the order and its legacy.

After touring the monastery there will be time to visit the gift shop before we stroll down to La Plana del Moli where they will be busily grilling up those delicious calçots for us. Lunch includes:
- unlimited wine
- calçots with romescu sauce
- grilled artichokes
- botifara & beans
- grilled lamb ribs
- fresh oranges
- unlimited cava
- cake
- coffee or tea
- a farewell chupito

Once we’ve had our fill we’ll hop back on our private coach and head home; we expect to arrive again in Barcelona between 18:00 and 19:00. As has become tradition, we will be entertained on the bus ride home by our President, Scott Wishart, whose singing and dancing has become famous for its entertainment value…

Kids, of course, are welcome! There is a play area next to the restaurant and there is also a children’s menu available. If you would like to bring your kids along drop us an email by clicking here.

We do have limited availability for this event so please sign up ASAP. RSVP by February 21 Also, please remember that advance payment is required to reserve your seat.

01. Mar 2008 20:15, Kokun, C/ Fraternitat 23, 2º Piso (Gràcia)
How does one describe Kokun? A new concept, at least for Barcelona, essentially a restaurant – or better yet "gastronomic social club" – based out of the charming Catalan and Basque couple Xavi and Montse's apartment. This is no ordinary apartment, with its designer furniture and adjoining open-air kitchen and gleaming red Wolf stove. The stars of the show are small gourmet tasting dishes which present creative variations on Catalan and Basque cuisine but without losing touch with the enjoyment of eating tasty food.

Xavi and Montse have put together a special menu just for the American Society (original menu in Spanish): Gourmet Testing Menu at Kokun

APERITIFS
- "Kokotxas" (crunchy appetizer) of cod with garlic sauce over toasted eggplant dressed with Getaria tkakoli (Basque carbonated wine)
- Foie toast with spinach, a touch of salt, and mango reduction a la Pedro Ximenez
- Calçot (green onion) tempura with romesco foam (almond hazelnut tomato sauce)
- Sea and mountain lobster, Iberian ham with tomato bread and smoked rosemary

ENTRÉES
- Marinated venison brochette with currants
- Pork loin stuffed with mushrooms and asparagus with pears in wine sauce
- Grilled sea bass on Nero's cuttlefish fettuccini al "all cremat" (singed garlic)

DESSERTS
- Infusion of chilled green tea with fruit and spices
- Tiramisu with toffee foam

DRINKS
- Getaria Tkakoli white carbonated wine
- Rias Biaxas Almuiña white wine
- Ocre Rouge biological red wine
- Water
- Coffee and biological tea

This is a small event with a capacity of just 12 persons so please sign up soon to ensure a spot! Also, please remember that advance payment is required to reserve your seat.

19. Apr 2008 12:00, Mercat Santa Caterina
Olive culture has ancient roots. Homer called it "liquid gold." In ancient Greece, athletes ritually rubbed it all over their bodies. Its mystical glow illuminated history. Drops of it seeped into the bones of dead saints and martyrs through holes in their tombs.

Olive oil has been more than mere food to the peoples of the Mediterranean: it has been medicinal, magical, an endless source of fascination and wonder and the fountain of great wealth and power. The olive tree, symbol of abundance, glory and peace, gave its leafy branches to crown the victorious in friendly games and bloody war, and the oil of its fruit has anointed the noblest of heads throughout history. Olive crowns and olive branches, emblems of benediction and purification, were ritually offered to deities and powerful figures: some were even found in Tutankhamen's tomb…

Olive oil is a natural juice which preserves the taste, aroma, vitamins and properties of the olive fruit. Olive oil is the only vegetable oil that can be consumed as it is - freshly pressed from the fruit.

But how do you choose a good olive oil? Is a “cucumber” flavor good or bad? How about a “peppery” flavor? Join us on April 19th for an olive oil tasting where we will taste 4 to 5 different varieties with an explanation of their different colors, odors and flavors.

Deadline for event registration is April 16th.

We do have limited availability for this event so please sign up ASAP. Also, please remember that advance payment is required to reserve your place.

Come on out and celebrate the festive season with us at our Holiday Happy Hour.

We're getting together for our monthly gathering a little earlier than usual in December to toast the holiday season at our regular Happy Hour venue - only we're adding a little something extra. We will have a raffle where the lucky winner gets to take home one of two holiday “lotes” - the traditional Christmas basket filled with goodies. The grand prize includes a Spanish cured ham, wine, cava, chorizo, manchego cheese, panettone, turron, pate and more! Raffle tickets will be available for purchase for only 2 euros each.

We'll also be having a game of "Dirty Santa" (it's not what you think!) which is a fun gift-swapping game that is also known as the "Yankee Swap" or "White Elephant."
To play "Dirty Santa" you just need to bring an inexpensive gift:

- The gift can be something someone would actually want or use, or it can be a fun/silly gift.
- The gift should be wrapped or in an envelope before arriving to the party and it should NOT have your name on it. (Anonymity is what makes it fun!)
Gift hints: Some fun & silly gifts that liven up the game are fruitcakes, ugly socks, gag hats and loud ties. Popular gifts include wine, candy, CDs, gift certificates and books.

As for our normal Happy Hour events there is no need to register in advance, just show up, all are welcome. We'd love to have you join us!

Join us after work at 3 Punts Gallery for a glass of wine and an exploration of photographer Mark Laita’s beautiful and rich black and white portraits.

There will be a brief discussion of the artist’s work (in English) and gallery representatives will be available to answer any questions.

To quench your thirst and tide you over until dinner 3 Punts Gallery will provide cava, white wine, fruit juices, sodas, water, tacos de queso, an assortment of nuts, and frutos secos.

This event is free to all American Society members.
A nominal fee of 5 euros will be charged to non-members.

Planning an event like this is a major undertaking and we need your help. Please sign-up for this event as soon as possible if you know you will be attending. That way we can be certain to have plenty of food, drink and entertainment for everyone.

LOCATION

We will be on the beach immediately next to the Mochima beach bar (with a crab on it) on Mar Bella beach (NOT Nova Mar Bella). The area is located halfway between La Oca restaurant on the beach and the Mar Bella Polideportivo center (large rectangular building on your right).

La Oca restaurant is immediately next to the large circular concrete wheelchair access leading down to the beach.

TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION

By car: take Paseo Garcia Faria (road that runs along the beach) towards the Forum. There are several parking options: (1) The first Mar Bella parking area on your right is for the beach and is free but will likely be full, (2) There is a second parking area at the Mar Bella Polideportivo center and La Oca that is paid but this is often full or closed by the local government (strange but true), so your best bet is (3) immediately after passing the Polideportivo center and after the intersection with Bac de Roda there is a free parking area on your right ... once you enter try to park as far back towards the center of Barcelona as possible (that is take a right after turning into the parking area).

Bicing: There is a Bicing stop next to the wheelchair access ramp, but may be full of bikes.

Metro: The nearest stop is Selva de Mar, about a 15 minute walk.

Buses: Lines 26 or Line 41 run along Paseo Garcia Faria.

The grand prize includes wine, cava, pate, cheese, turron, chocolates and more! The second prize basket includes wine, cava, whiskey, cheese, turron, truffles, marzipan, cookies and more!

Raffle tickets will be available for purchase for only 2 euros each so bring some cash and don’t miss your chance to win a Christmas basket stocked with goodies!

We'll also be having a game of "Dirty Santa" (it's not what you think!) which is a fun gift-swapping game that is also known as the "Yankee Swap" or "White Elephant."
To play "Dirty Santa" you just need to bring an inexpensive gift:
- The gift should be valued at about 10 euros (no more than that).

Ready to stuff yourself with those irresistible grilled calçots?

We will be heartily celebrating this month one of our favorite annual Catalan traditions – the Calçotada! We all had a wonderful time last year with a cultural visit to an olive oil museum located on the site of a 13th century farmhouse in Les Borges Blanques followed by the traditional feast.

This year we are headed to the lovely medieval village of Montblanc…

We start off our day trip by meeting in front of the Hard Rock Cafe on Plaza Catalunya at 9:30am where we will hop on a private coach. Don’t be late!

We will be visiting the Clos Montblanc Bodegas - the largest producer in the DO Conca de Barbera. Once a co-operative, the bodega was bought some years ago by one of its members. They still buy the bulk of their grapes but they also own some vineyards from which they produce their top Cuvees. The tour of the wine making facilities will then be topped off with a wine tasting – of course!

After touring the bodega & being temped with their wines there will be time to visit the wine shop before heading off to lunch at El Molí de Mallol which is situated on the site of a 19th century water-run gypsum mill.

Included in the cost of the trip are:
- transportation by private coach
- entry fee and guided tour of Clos Montblanc Bodegas
- wine tasting
- the delicious calçotada feast
- A special gift of Clos Montblanc wine for each attendee!

Lunch includes:
wine - Clos Montblanc Xipella
mineral water
lots of calçots with romsecue sauce
escudella de payès
white beans
paradilla de carne which includes:
- lamb
- longaniza de Montblanc
- butiffara negra
- as well as grilled artichokes & tomatoes
crema catalana
Cava Portell Brut Nature

Once we’ve had our fill we’ll hop back on our private coach and head home; we expect to arrive again in Barcelona between 18:00 and 19:00. As has become tradition, we will be entertained on the bus ride home by our President, Victor Horcasitas, whose singing and dancing has become famous for its entertainment value…

We do have limited availability for this event so sign up today! Attendees must register by March 18. Also, please remember that advance payment is required to reserve your seat.

Payment can be made to the American Society by bank transfer or deposit; please send a copy of your bank receipt to ad......@amersoc.com and you will receive confirmation of your reservation.

We look forward to seeing you there!!!

HIKE DESCRIPTION:
The first leg of our hike is 6.69 km long. It starts out on a paved country road which becomes a wider dirt trail that winds around the foot of a bluff and leads us to the Tenes River Valley. At about 5 km we cross the Tenes River and walk along its banks before ascending to Sant Miquel. This last little bit before arriving at the Abbey is a 150 m. climb over a distance of about 1 km. of narrow, rocky trail.

Our lunch spot will be the Medieval Abbey of Sant Miquel del Fai - the only Romanesque chapel in Catalonia to have been built inside a grotto. The Abbey is tucked into the valley’s edge where the Tenes River Waterfall tumbles over 100 meters to valley’s floor. The complex includes the 15th cen. gothic-style Priory House, the 10th cen. Chapel of Sant Miquel and the 10th cen. Sant Martí hermitage. A flight of stairs leads below to the Cave of Sant Miquel, where the mineral deposits have formed stalagmites and stalactites and further along another set of caves can be explored. Additionally, there is a small museum with fossils from the area, a picnic area and a small café where bocadillos can be purchased if you need to supplement your lunch. There are restroom facilities available and a gift shop at the exit where ice cream bars will tempt you before leaving for the rest of the hike…

For the return to Sant Feliu (5.96 km.) we pick up the GR5 which follows the local road briefly before plunging into dense vegetation and leads us up even higher. Our path is at its narrowest on this section of our hike and it is on this stretch that we will reach our highest point at 630 meters as we walk along the valley’s ridge. Before you know it we will be back in Sant Feliu!

This is a great hike in a beautiful location - to see a screen shot of the route just go to the File Center (on the resources menu above). Once you have signed up for the event we’ll email you the Google Earth file with the trail details.

HIKE DESCRIPTION:
LEG 1: (10:45-15:00) Sant Marti de Centelles -> Masia Bellver [13k; 350m-1158m]
The first leg of our hike is 13k long and follows a wide dirt road that varies from hard-packed earth to loose gravel & stone.
• 0-2k: We begin by crossing the Avenco River & following it a short while before turning toward Tagamanent, this initial segment of the walk is very easy on a wide, well shaded trail. Along this section: 16th century ice wells. [2K; 350m-450m]
• 2k-10k: Our walk begins to climb at a mid-grade incline & continues to climb for 8k. This is the most difficult part of the hike. [8k; 450m-1050m]
• 10k-13k: At about 1050m (10k into the hike) the trail levels out, elevation increases & decreases gradually. Highest point (1158m) is along this segment at the intersection where our trail meets with the GR5. Most of this section has been cleared for pasture and it is in this area where Masia Bellit and Masia l´Agustí are found. Keep an eye out for: wild roses, lavender, thyme & blackberry brambles all in bloom, wild strawberries beginning to fruit and the occasional wild onion & garlic just about to go to seed. [3k; 1050m-1161m]

LUNCH: (15:00-16:00)
We’ll have our picnic lunch on the grounds of the Masia Bellit which offers beautiful views of the Turo Tagamanent, the Cingles de Berti and the plains below.

LEG 2: (16:00-19:30) Masia Bellver -> Sant Marti de Centelles [7k; 1055m–350m]
• 13k-14k: Masia Bellver to Tagamanent ruins. This is where the trail changes from a dirt road to a narrow walking path. The climb from the base of the hill to the top is a somewhat steep & rocky climb of .7k & an increase in elevation of 90m. Rocks are loose- please heed warning signs to be careful of falling rocks! At the summit you will find spectacular 360 views! Wild flowers of many kinds in full bloom carpet the area surrounding the ruins & fill the air with their perfume. Due to the abundance of flowers in this area please take care when walking the narrow paths here not to disturb the many honey bees and bumble bees that fill the air with their buzzing. If you are allergic to bees then we very strongly recommend you do NOT take part in this segment of the hike. [1k; 965m-1055m]
• 14k-20k: Descent of 700m from Tagamanent ruins to Sant Marti de Centelles train station via GR5. The trail is narrow, rocky and uneven and filled with loose stones, tree roots & a number of fallen trees along the way. The path is clearly marked & descends through a dense forest - watch for pinon pines, rosemary and wild roses, lavender, thyme & blackberry brambles all in bloom. [6k; 1055m - 350m]

This hike is longer than the last and requires a good bit of endurance for the 8k climb, but the gorgeous views are well worth it!!! So, don’t forget to sign-up below and put a few energy bars in your backpack!

29. Jun 2010 20:30, Vom Fass, C/ Cigne, 14
Olive culture has ancient roots. Homer called it "liquid gold." In ancient Greece, athletes ritually rubbed it all over their bodies. Its mystical glow illuminated history. Drops of it seeped into the bones of dead saints and martyrs through holes in their tombs…

The ancients were quick to find the remarkable versatility of vinegar. Around 5,000 BC, the Babylonians used it as a preservative and as a condiment, and it was they who began flavoring it with herbs and spices…

But how do you pick a good vinegar or oil?

Join us at Vom Fass to explore first hand the diverse world of these ancient condiments that remain an everyday custom. How? By tasting them of course!

Experts Carlos & Philippe will guide us through the tasting experience of a variety of vinegars and oils in their cute little shop in Gracia. The tasting will be accompanied by a small selection of snacks and water.

Remember to sign up right away – this is a small event with a limited with room for only a select few so save your place today!
